What are dental fillings?
When a patient has tooth decay, Dr. Lockwood may recommend a dental filling in Kenai, Alaska. Our dentist will remove the decay from the tooth. After testing to ensure that all of the decay is removed, the tooth is cleaned thoroughly and the area is filled with the dental filling material. At Kenai Dental Clinic, we offer both amalgam and composite dental fillings.
What are amalgam dental fillings?
Amalgam dental fillings are also called silver dental fillings. They are made from mercury mixed with silver, tin, zinc, and copper. Silver fillings are very durable and they can withstand the chewing forces of the mouth. Amalgam fillings last for at least 10 to 15 years, which is longer than composite dental fillings. Silver fillings are not as expensive as composite dental fillings.
What are composite dental fillings?
Composite dental fillings, which are also called tooth-colored dental fillings, are made of plastic and tooth-colored materials. Composite dental fillings can be made to match the shade of your natural teeth, so they are very aesthetic. These fillings are bonded to the tooth structure, which makes them strong. Tooth-colored dental fillings require less tooth enamel removal than amalgam fillings.
